Louisiana Homeschool Regulations

The state of Louisiana has strict regulations when it comes to homeschooling. Parents who want to educate their children in a home study program must apply and be approved annually by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. In order to remain in compliance with homeschool laws in Louisiana, the following requirements must be maintained:

  1. Apply with the Board of Education Every Year
    • The initial application must include a certified copy of your child’s birth certificate. A renewal application must be submitted by October 1 of the school year or within twelve months after initial approval, whichever is later.
  2. Teach the Required Subjects
    • You must teach using a curriculum of a quality that is equal to what is taught in the public schools, and subjects must be taught at the same grade level they are in the public schools.
  3. Teach for the Required Period of Time
    • You must operate your home study program for 180 days each year.
  4. Provide Immunization Records
    • Provide evidence of immunization for meningococcal disease to the State Board of Education unless you have a waiver for religious, medical, or personal reasons.
  5. Apply for Renewal
    • This must include a complete outline of each subject taught, a list of books and materials used, copies of the student’s work, copies of standardized tests, and statements of third parties who have observed the child’s progress

The best way to stay on top of changes in homeschool regulations is to connect with other local homeschoolers in Kentucky.
